DEMOCRAT LEADER: MARRIAGE IS “BIGOTED”

The leader of Janet Napolitano’s Democratic Party, Howard Dean, declared today that the notion of family reflected in marriage between a man and a woman is “bigoted.” This was in response to New York’s highest court refusing to redefine marriage in that state.
Here in Arizona, backers of the Protect Marriage Arizona Amendment today submitted more than 307,000 signatures in support of a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. That number includes about 200,000 volunteer signatures — the most volunteer signatures ever collected in the history of Arizona.
Despite this outpouring of support, expect gay marriage backers to launch a court challenge designed to prevent you from voting on this vital issue.
Ten years ago I drafted Arizona’s state law defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman, and until deciding to run for Governor was a leader of the Protect Marriage Arizona effort. Today I congratulate the PMA coalition for a record-breaking signature effort.
Four years ago Janet Napolitano said same sex couples should receive all the benefits of marriage. Earlier this year she said she thought the PMA Amendment went too far. This issue is just one more indicator that Janet Napolitano’s views are way out of the mainstream in Arizona.
